Mysteries are common in our world, and some of them are totally baffling and mind-blowing, with little rationale surrounding them. One such incident occurred way back in 1954 at Haneda Airport, Japan, when a mysterious man landed at the airport and showed his passport from Taured. The customs were perplexed, and after multiple questioning, suspected probable criminal activity and detained the man. Under police surveillance, the man was escorted to a hotel room and put on watch. However, he soon disappeared, and to date, no one understood where the man went. He never left the building through the front door, and the room was multiple floors above the ground level for the man to scale down. It was like he disappeared into thin air while waiting for the authorities to respond from Taured. But where was Taured? Was the man a traveler from the parallel universe? Or was the entire thing a hoax or an urban legend?
At a quick glance, the story looks fictitious and straight out of a Hitchcock movie. The questions about The Man from Taured still linger all over the internet and have been circulating for quite a long time, with people coming up with different explanations.
The Story Behind the Man from Taured
The famous story starts at Japan’s Haneda Airport, where a mysterious man arrived, claiming to be from the unknown country of Taured. After being detained for suspected criminal activity, however, he vanished from the face of the Earth, never to be seen again.
The man claimed that he had arrived in Japan with the intention of attending a business meeting. However, when the officials called the said business, they realized that not only was the business non-existent, but the area has been occupied by another business for decades. Afterward, to prove his innocence, the man asked the police to call the hotel where had made a reservation. But the front desk of the hotel cross-checked their documents and verified that such a reservation never took place.
The case took a bizarre turn, however, when the man was presented with the map of the real world. The man pointed at Andorra and asserted that Andorra was a fake country and that Taured existed in place of Andorra for more than a thousand years. The confused officers detained the man for further investigation and checked him into another hotel.
The Man from Taured’s Mystery
After he was checked into a hotel, the immigration and customs officials placed a guard outside the door, in case the man from Taured decided to bolt. But by the next morning, the man was gone. The guards never saw anyone entering or leaving the room, and it seemed like the man disappeared into thin air. The officers inspected every nook and corner of the room and decided that it was physically impossible for a person to scale down from such a great height, or make their escape by any other means. To make the matters worse, the documents that were seized from the man, including his passports, visa, business documents, and verification papers were missing from the airport storage facility. The entire ordeal left the airport authorities scratching their heads and questioning their own sanity. But they couldn’t have all imagined it. Or could they?
The Man from Taured, Debunked
The mystery remains one of the most prominent ones in the 20th and the 21st century. All iterations of the tale say that the man was a neatly dressed Caucasian, who was confused about why the Japanese weren’t taking him seriously. Though some people suggest that the man was an interdimensional traveler or a person who inadvertently fell victim to a timeslip, for the most part, the story is believed to be a work of fiction. The story is believed to have appeared in the 1984 science fiction novel A Directory of Possibilities, and since then, has been floating around on the internet. More reasons to dismiss the case as an urban legend come from the fact that there is no official account of the incident that has been recorded. Since Japan was under the American Occupation during the time, there would’ve been careful documentation of the incident.
Though it is exciting to think that the Man from Taured is real, unfortunately, little to no evidence exists, to back it up.
